Un’ultima prospettiva rilevante è relativa ai processi di innovazione tecnologica. A questo proposito appaiono rilevanti i processi e le opportunità in corso secondo due punti di vista complementari.
Il primo è quello relativo all’identificazione di opzioni tecnologiche appropriate rispetto ai problemi della sostenibilità e della vivibilità urbana (efficacia delle tecnologie).
Il secondo potrebbe essere orientato a prendere in esame i processi di innovazione in senso stretto, considerando in particolare tre insiemi di dinamiche:
- l’interazione tra i diversi soggetti coinvolti nello sviluppo e nell’applicazione delle tecnologie;
- la socializzazione delle innovazioni (vale a dire il fatto che attorno a un sistema di tecnologie si produca un sistema di conoscenze, rappresentazioni, norme e condizioni sociali che ne consente un effettivo trasferimento, in particolare tra mondo della ricerca e mondo delle imprese e/o policy-makers);
- le condizioni economiche e tecnologiche per l’introduzione delle nuove tecnologie.
